INTERVIEWER: What do you think makes Downton Abbey so special?
"I get about Mrs Hughes, I get about."
“Mary wants power, but is prepared to play by the old rules. Sybil wants it by the new rules. And Edith just wants anything she can get.” —Julian Fellowes
Downton Abbey S4 Modern AU: After the death of her husband, Mary Crawley must not only learn to rebuild her personal life but also deal with the increased responsibility of running Downton. Financial advisors Charles Blake and Tony Foyle are brought in to evaluate the company but Mary clashes with Blake’s lack of sentimentality towards the rich history of the company.
Mrs Hughes: “What did Miss O’Brien want?”
Carson: “She convinced her Ladyship to hire her darned nephew as a new footman. And I didn’t have a single word to say in that matter.”
Mrs Hughes: “But you were suppposed to make the interview.”
Carson: “O’Brien immediately sent him a telegram that he has the job.”
Mrs Hughes: “Well, he doesn’t have it yet.”
Carson: “I know but…”
Mrs Hughes: “You are too soft Mr Carson. You have the right to, what does his Lordship say about it?”
Carson: “He went to London before I had the chance to talk to him.”
Mrs Hughes: “What I’d like to know. Why did it take you so long until you finally hired a footman?”
Carson: “Ugh, I have interviewed a few but these lads of the post-war generation are not suited for the post. They all want a job that allows them to court their girls when they come home in the evening and on top of that they also want the money to go out with them.”
Mrs Hughes: “Ah, and free tickets for the county fair and a free ticket for the bus home.”
Carson: “Exactly this.”
Mrs Hughes: “Well, now that he’s here we have to see what we can do with him. But there’s one good thing about it. No matter what he does wrong, we can always put the blame on Miss O’Brien.”
I had no idea, you didn’t know this scene. I found it in the German ITunes edition of Downton Abbey. I knew it wasn’t in the episode broadcasted by ITV, but I thought it was perhaps the PBS version.
Oh my goodness! Why did they cut this? This is amazing!! X
Why on God’s earth…. no wonder it looked as though there wasn’t many Chelsie scenes in the later half of the series *shakes fist*
I’ve just found out that I get to watch THIS ARGUMENT (along with the rest of the episode) on a movie screen next month. asdfghjkl
Hopefully it won’t be a mistake taking my husband with me. I guess I’ll need someone to pick me up off the floor after it’s all over. :-D
Dear god yes! I love you Elsie Hughes!
